Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Office is one of competent Authority in Kaohsiung City. Kaohsiung County and Kaohsiung City have been combined since 2011. We actively would like to integrate and establish an animal shelter which could provide good quality for animals and try to let citizens to have the knowledge of animal protection act. We wish animal could have better living quality and wish citizen to visit the shelter. The best wish is that we hope citizen could adopt the animal from the shelter. The things we set out to do are that we wish to improve animal welfare, turnover rate of space, and citizens’ willingness to adopt the animal. We don’t need a concentration camp for animals or build a disposal area which people don’t want to visit. The area of Kaohsiung Yanchao Animal Protection and Education Park is 0.9 hectare. We have two divisions, Administration Center and Adoption and Education Center. We had a preparation in 2012 and started construction on September in 2014. Then, we completed the project on May and opened the area on July in 2016. We take care of the animal welfare, disease control and energy saving and carbon reduction. We have total 360 dogs and cats currently.

The park is located at the end of National Highway No. 10 and serves as a must-pass point for traveling between the nine districts of east Kaohsiung . During the Japanese colonial period, this area was once a glorious “Banana Kingdom,” and the slogan “North Jiufen, South Qishan” was even coined. The sugar industry and the presence of the Japanese gave Qishan bananas an irreplaceable position. However, as times changed, the sugar industry declined, and its former glory faded away. The Japanese left, but Qishan’s bananas remained, surviving only in the stories told by the older generation. You may not be aware that bananas are the fruit that generates the most agricultural waste. However, here you will learn how we transform various agricultural waste into something magical, achieving low-carbon sustainable development through a circular economy. By integrating local cultural and historical context with the sugar industry, we create two environmental education programs. Through sensory experiences, participants explore and understand the “Banana Kingdom,” immersing themselves in the sugar-producing countryside. These programs emphasize the importance of cultural preservation, community identity, and learning to coexist harmoniously with the natural environment in our pursuit of a low-carbon, sustainable home
